Having poor posture is when you hold yourself out of alignment and cause those muscles to tighten up and become shortened, while others are lengthened and become weak. This may then lead to pain, tension, injuries, decreased range of motion and bad posture.
Common Causes of Poor Posture
Many technology related activities (such as using a phone, tablet, laptop or an office worker sitting at their computer). From looking down – putting a lot of tension on your neck, your shoulders being pulled forward towards your chest and an increased curve in your back – causing pain and tension on your back and chest muscles.
Technology activities are a very common cause these days but other causes can include: age, weight, clothing or footwear that doesn’t fit properly, incorrect lifting and carrying habits, sitting on a wallet, nutrition, injuries or surgeries, etc.
Your body is very smart and will adapt to whatever position you put it in. When your body experiences pain (it sees it as a problem) so it will adapt to whatever is less painful or causes less of a threat to the body.
It’s true that by improving your posture it can help reduce your discomfort. When you get a massage to help with poor posture, it will help loosen up those tight muscles. But keep in mind, just one massage session isn’t going to cure your poor posture.
It took awhile for your body to adapt to your current posture, it’s going to take some time to improve it too. With a commitment to regular treatments, doing self care exercises to help stretch and strengthen your muscles in between treatments and being aware of your posture are all ways to improve your posture.
During your first treatment, we will discuss what your symptoms are, do some testing so we have a baseline to improve from, perform a focused treatment and reassess afterwards. K-Taping is also available. Before leaving I will provide you with some helpful self care exercises.
