Massage can make back pain worse but is not the intended effect. Sometimes if communication between the client and therapist when the pressure is too much it could result in further damage to the client.
Although it is normal to feel some soreness in the area(s) that were worked on for up to a few days. This is known as DOMS – Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness. It is more commonly know for when doing intense workouts, it normally takes some time to recover after an intense workout. This can also be the case if it has been a while since your last massage or it’s your first massage. You muscles aren’t used to that type of workout and need time to recover.
It’s important to know that Massage doesn’t have to hurt to be effective. If you are feeling pain or discomfort during your massage, make sure you communicate this to your massage therapist so they can make adjustments. Everyone has a different pain tolerance and it’s very important that you are communicating with your therapist.
No Pain = No Gain – is not a concept that should be used in massage therapy.. too much pain can cause more injuries!
