Cupping Massage Therapy – Tissue Distraction Release With Movement

Cupping Massage Moncton

Cupping massage therapy is based on creating a negative pressure and drawing body tissues outwards. Some benefits of cupping therapy is it can help:

  • Increase Local Circulation
  • Improve Lymphatic Flow
  • Release Scar Tissue Adhesion
  • Release Trigger Points (Knots)
  • Relax Muscles

The practice of cupping has been around for close to 5000 years, used in Egypt, China, Greece and has been growing in popularity around the world.

In traditional cupping styles, the cups are passively left on multiple regions of the body. Using a static technique where the cups are simply left on for 3 to 30 minutes. Most of the cupping styles you may come across around here are: silicone cups, pumps or suction gun cups.

I use silicone cups which have a low toxicity & low chemical reactions with lotions and creams. They are disinfected after every use and stored to prevent getting dirty when not being used.

Tissue Distraction Release with Movement (TDR-WM) – uses silicone cups with lots of oil to allow the cups to glide in various directions helps to release your tissues.

The cups glide along the muscles while the muscles/tissues are being lengthened and shortened underneath the cup via active and passive movements of the joints.

Instead of compressing the tissues as most massage and tissue release techniques involve, the focus of TDR-WM is tissue distraction with movement.

There are different sizes of cups for different areas of the body and the therapist can change the amount of suction of each cup – so it’s important to advise your therapist if the suction is ever too much or too light.

Common areas include cupping for back pain, knee pain, neck and shoulder pain.

Cupping Massage Therapy Precautions

  • Cupping massage therapy can cause redness with the possibility of bruising and delayed soreness for the next few days

  • Advise the therapist if at any point it becomes too much / too painful, since this involves a pulling on your skin – it’s normal to feel some sort of discomfort though
