1) Using an ergonomically correct shovel, bend low at the knees
2) Scoop & Lift upwards with your legs, do not lift with your back!
3) Turn sideways without twisting your back. Point your feet in the direction you are throwing and toss the snow.
4) If snow is deeper than one foot, use your shovel as a blade to chop it down before shovelling it up.
Important to Remember – most people don’t do this activity on a regular basis, so don’t over do it.
- Do some light stretching before shovelling your driveway
- Take breaks (have some water, have a snack, get warmed up, give your muscles a break)
- If you’re dealing with wet snow, take smaller scoops as it is a lot heavier
- Be careful if you have any grooves, cracks or bumps in your driveway or walkway that your shovel can catch on – you may have to change the angle and go slower when pushing snow
- Also remember, using salt can melt icy sections and help prevent slipping
